Administration under the Rashtrakutas
The Rashtrakuta Empire was characterized by a well-organized and efficient administrative system. The empire was divided into several provinces called rashtras, each governed by a rashtrapati. These rashtras were further subdivided into vishayas or districts, headed by vishayapatis.
Below the vishayas were bhuktis, consisting of approximately 50 to 70 villages. The bhuktis were administered by bhogapatis, who were directly appointed by the central government. This hierarchical structure ensured effective control and communication throughout the empire.
While the central government played a significant role in administration, village administration was also entrusted to local authorities. Village headmen were responsible for overseeing day-to-day affairs, but village assemblies also played a crucial role in decision-making and community governance.
This administrative system, combining central oversight with local participation, contributed to the stability and prosperity of the Rashtrakuta Empire.
